FIRST THINGS FIRST

People always say that first impressions matter. Fair enough, completely agree. One thing I don’t agree on with is the idea of having to show a better version of you. Why? It’s like when you go on a date – not that I’m the go-to on advice in this district, literally only been on one – you have to impress them with this evolved version of yourself. It’s not really you! When do you show the real you? I’m going to be a hypocrite now and show this photo of myself.  It’s a fairly recent photo of myself, with a new little friend on my head. I named him Octavian. I think, as people, we should show ourselves rather than a version that is “better”. How better is it really? You aren’t just lying to everyone else but you’re lying to yourself.     …Well, that got a little deep, didn’t it?

Anyway, my name’s Alice. I’m 19. I’m studying Writing and Publishing at the University of Derby.   Obviously, this year hasn’t been easy for anyone and even though I didn’t have much of the year at university, which is a shame for my first year, I still got on with it.  As you can tell, writing is a big thing in my life but I do delve in other things. I bake and cook, I garden, and I read. Recently, I have been doing some fundraising for Mind. I’ve done it for a couple of reasons. The first reason is due to my own mental health and the other reason is because April is Autism Awareness month which means a great deal to me because of my younger brother. He was diagnosed with autism just before his third birthday, he’s non verbal too. My first book is dedicated to Jorge.

I should probably point out that “Evelynn” is not my name. My actual name is Alice Foggerty. The reason behind “Evelynn” comes from when I was first coming up with ideas for a story. I was watching that movie Transcendence, the one with Johnny Depp. The character that Rebecca Hall plays was called Evelyn and the name just really stood out to me. Saying that, for Alice, I had to put the extra ‘n’. It just looked right for her.  Most names in the series will have meaning.  My own name means “nobility” and Evelyn means “wished for”. On the surface, it may look like the name is meaningless but I promise that it isn’t. Everything has meaning.

Even you.
